Type Locality and Naming

Southernmost Anhui. The Banqiao Fm was named by the Geological Department of Nanjing University in 1958 and published by Xia Bangdong in 1962. The reference section is the Jinzipai section in Qimen County, Anhui Province. Formerly in lower Shangxi Gr, then transferred to upper Shuangqiaoshan Gr.

Synonym: (板桥组)


Lithology and Thickness

Lower part of Banqiao Fm consists of rhythmic interbedding of silty slate with slate. Middle part is composed of interbedding of phyllitic siltstone with sandy slate. Upper part is slate, silty slate and phyllitic siltstone. The lower part was often injected with the intermediate acid dikes along bedding. The formation is over 3000 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in conformable contact with the overlying Mukeng Fm

Upper contact

It is in conformable contact with the underlying Zhangqian Fm

Regional extent

Southernmost Anhui and northeast Jiangxi. It mainly developed in Qimen County, southern Anhui Province and extends westward to Jiangxi Province.

The slate yields microplants, such as: Leiopsophosphaera, Polyporata, Taeniatum.
